New local heavy goods vehicle taxes: the Senate notes anomalies

News of the 21/05/2021

Following the hearing of Transport Minister Jean-Baptiste Djebbari, senators point to a number of flaws in the new heavy vehicle taxes to come.

The Committee on Sustainable Development notes in particular the disparities in the conditions of application between regions. "We risk having 13 regions with 13 different on-board systems, okay to leave freedom to the regions, but at some point we will have to coordinate," said Senator LR Didier Mandelli.

These differences risk causing competition between regions and traffic deferrals, which is not the objective sought by elected officials.

The government is however in the process of drawing the contours of the implementation of these taxes which will concern at least all trucks and vehicles over 12 tonnes but also could go down to 3.5 tonnes.
