The recent regrouping of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin allows Alsatian elected officials to put the ecotax and the porticos back on the national scene.
Since January 1, 2021, the departments of Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin have been brought together within the European community of Alsace (CEA). It was in these departments that the ecotax was born in the early 2000s by a few elected officials, the project was then abandoned following numerous protests.
But this new community will take over the management of "un-concessioned roads and highways, classified in the national public road domain and located in the departments of Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin", including the A352 and A36 out of 6,600 km.
Frédéric Bierry, president of the ECA, clarified that it is the executive which will make the final decision following the departmental elections.
