Stricter CO₂ objectives for heavy goods vehicles: tension between European ministers

News of the 20/10/2023

Europe maintains its unachievable climate targets for road transport. Despite an encouraging report from the Transport Commission, the European Council approved a radical reduction in CO₂ emissions from manufacturers by 2030, 2035 and 2040. These targets ignore the lack of infrastructure for electric vehicles in Europe. Only maxic trucks, which run on diesel, are exempt for the moment.

A clause for revising the objectives is scheduled for 2027, before the 2030 deadline. The Commission will then have to examine the deployment of recharging and refueling infrastructures with alternative fuels.

The process is not complete: the Council will have to discuss with the European Parliament on the basis of its general orientation. The result of the discussions will have to be validated by the Council and Parliament.
