Traffic offences: “manslaughter” becomes “road homicide”

News of the 18/08/2023

Elisabeth Borne has announced a new name for certain fatal road accidents, which will now be called "road homicides" and no longer "manslaughter", a term deemed unacceptable by associations of relatives of victims. This change in vocabulary is mainly symbolic, because it will have no impact on the penalties incurred, while the administrative penalties for driving under the influence of drugs are reinforced.

This new name also implies a modification of the term used in article 221-6-1 of the current Penal Code which stipulates: "Manslaughter is punishable by five years' imprisonment and a fine of 75,000 euros".
