The Valencia region of Spain has been hit by severe weather, including violent thunderstorms and tornadoes. The extreme weather events have already caused the deaths of 51 people, according to a report in the early hours.
This eastern part of the country is experiencing exceptionally heavy rainfall, with quantities of water equivalent to almost a year's worth of rain falling in just a few hours, between 4 p.m. and 3 a.m.
The consequences are dramatic: many vehicles have been swept away in several municipalities. On the highways, motorists have taken refuge higher up, some in the cabins of trucks that have taken them in, others on the roofs of trailers.
