Winter conditions in Italy: Mont Blanc tunnel to remain closed for heavy goods vehicles

News of the 18/04/2025

The recent snowfall in Italy has caused major disruptions, including the closure of the Mont Blanc Tunnel to heavy goods vehicles. This measure, in effect since Friday, April 18, will remain in place throughout the Easter weekend. Authorities took this decision due to the risk of landslides on the Aosta-Turin route and flooding on the Aosta-Milan crossing.

The bad weather has caused significant traffic jams, with trucks backed up for several kilometers. There are currently approximately 7 kilometers of traffic jams. Heavy goods vehicles heading towards the tunnel must turn around and take the alternative route via the A8 motorway and Ventimiglia, crossing the south of France.

The consequences of this snowfall are also visible in the French and Swiss Alps, where avalanches and road closures have been reported. In Val Thorens, one person was seriously injured by an avalanche, and several ski resorts have had to close their areas due to the high avalanche risk.

In Italy, meteorological services described the rainfall as "intense and abundant," turning roads into veritable traps for motorists. River levels rose rapidly, prompting evacuations in parts of Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and additional measures may be taken to ensure travel safety. Motorists are advised to check traffic forecasts and avoid high-risk areas.
