Following the abolition of Low Emission Zones (LEZs) by the National Assembly, Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot acknowledged the hasty implementation. "We may have put the cart before the horse," he said, citing a lack of alternatives for motorists and insufficient public transport.
ZFEs, which are supposed to reduce air pollution, have been criticized for their social impact, particularly on low-income households. Tabarot is now calling for a "review" of the system, while reaffirming the objective of combating fine particles.
Paris City Hall, opposed to this removal, points out that air pollution causes thousands of premature deaths each year and calls for the reinstatement of these zones. Two parliamentary votes are still awaited to make a final decision.
